Devoted math teacher receives a huge surprise from his students
Julio Castro is a natural-born teacher. Even as a teenager, kids were already asking him to tutor them. “[M]y friends liked the way I talked so it became a side thing throughout high school and college and it paid a lot of my tuition,” he told Patch.
Since 2019, he has been teaching math at the Yula Boys school in LA, which requires him to commute about four hours a day by scooter and bus. Despite it all, he makes sure to go the extra mile to help his students, even if it means getting home past his kids’ bedtime because he stayed after school.
It was when one of his students saw him searching for cars under $2,000 online, that a group of them decided to take action. According to KABC, they raised more than $30,000, getting donations from various organizations like The Change Reaction. Not only did this pay for a 2019 Mazda CX-3, but also covered for a year of insurance and gas.
Castro was completely oblivious to the whole ruse when he received the surprise of his life on his first day back from summer break. Now that he has a car, he says he’ll be able to spend more time with his girlfriend and kids, as well as use it for lesson plans.
