Teacher Inspires Students with Daily Affirmations
Talking to yourself in the mirror could be awkward but, according to science, it is also powerful. Studies show that, among multiple proven benefits, practicing positive affirmations has been linked to lowering stress and improving academic performance.
Anyunna Phillips, known as Miss P., is well aware of this. Every morning she asks her students to walk up to a mirror surrounded by written words of inspiration and say something positive about themselves out loud. Some of the top picks are “I’m special,” “I’m brave,” and “I’m loved!” “I want them to feel empowered and to know that they can do anything,” Phillips told Good Morning America.
The Georgia teacher recorded this moment and shared it on her social media account, @cool.missp, getting over 20,000 likes! “The response on Instagram has been overwhelming. It’s been amazing,” she said.
According to Miss P., reciting affirmations sets the tone for the day and she makes sure to remind her kindergartners of what they said to themselves that morning throughout the rest of the day. She has noticed that this initiative not only has improved her students’ overall mental health, but also hers. She encourages everyone around her, children and adults alike, to try it. Here goes ours: “We’re going to have a jolly good day!”
